Default noisy clutch

just put a crate motor in 69 camero and installed rock crusher with new clutch. in neutral, there is noise which goes away when clutch is engaged. please don't tell me the tob or pilot bearing is not adjusted correctly, and if so can it be adjusted without taking the damn thing apart again (please god).

If the noise is only present with clutch pedal depressed, then most likely, its the t/out bearing needing replacement.

The noise is present when the clutch is not depressed. The car is in neutral, engine running, and the noise only goes away when you push down on the clutch.

So what all is new or rebuilt and what not? Wonder if it's not something in the trans.

New engine, clutch and things therein, original NOS rock crusher, new driveline and universal joints. The clutch is not ridden, nor is it incorrectly disengaged when the car is driven.

My mistake of misreading your posts.
If noise happens during no clutch pedal depressed, then trans issue.
If noise goes away when clutch depressed, then trans issue.
During neutral and no clutch action, t/out bearing is idle, trans input shaft and countershaft are turning with engine.
Clutch depressed, clutch disc, trans input shaft, and countershaft stop turning.

Will report back upon final diagnosis after we tear into it. Thanks for the responses.

Might sound like a dumb question but I've seen it happen before.
Are you 100% sure you remembered to put gear oil in the trans?

Great question and I am totally capable of failing to do something that simple. It was done and it has been checked again to be sure the level is correct since we've seen some spots on the floor. Normally I can smell the different lubes, but with my filthy cigar habit over the years I no longer have that ability.
