Newbie needs help determining whether this car is real RS/SS
Hello,
I'm intererested in purchasing a '69 camaro, but know very little about them (other than I find them really cool). I just sold a '65 Shelby Cobra and want to get something to replace it. I found this car online
http://www.admcars.com/inventorymana...=view&Id=91271
Seller claims this is the "the real deal" RS/SS. However, there is little in the ad to verify claims. I did talk to the seller yesterday and among other things one of the items I noted is that the car did not come stock with a tachometer. Stock guages are a speedometer and a fuel gauge (two large panel guages) with a small clock in the center. I find it hard to believe that a real 4sp RS/SS would be sold by the factory without a tach. I suspect you guys will know - and I'd love to know.
It's not that I would not buy the car, but I don't want to pay real RS/SS price for an RS/SS clone.
Can one of you guys take a look at the ad and let me know what you think and answer my question above.
Any advice you can provide would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike

I think we talked about this before, there is no gage requirment in any option you had to order what you wanted. There is no way to be 100% sure it a true RS/SS the best way to check is to verify it is numbers matching and Verify that Motor number that it is a 350 or 396. The only way to get those motors was an SS option.
RPO Z22 (rally sport) included black grill with hidden headlights, headlight washers, fender striping, simulated rear fender louvers, wheel opening moldings, black body sill, RS emblems on grill, steering wheel and rear panel, Rally Sport front nameplates, bright accented taillights, roof drip moldings (exc conv), and back-up lights below rear bumper.
RPO Z27 (super sport) included 350ci, 300hp engine, power disc front brakes, floor-mounted 3-speed manual transmission, special hood, suspension and trim, sport striping, hood insulation, F70xl5 white letter tires, 14x7 wheels, black-painted body sill, simulated rear fender louvers, SS emblems on fenders, grill and rear panel. SS increased in price to $311.75, then $327.55 which included dual exhausts with bright tips

Good call Gorn. It was an option. I am concerned about the engine, probably not numbers matchin. Also right on the authentication. without the 'broadcast sheet' or 'build sheet' there will be no way of knowing with this car. The add says the hide-away lights are inop... not a good sign. It also says most are inoperable... not true.
Nice looking car though.

A quick history lesson on the Gen 1 rally sport head light system. In 67 they used an electric motor to open and close the light doors. To say it was a poor design would be an understatement. Their plastic gear would strip out, a great many did not make it out of the 12 month 12K warranty. In 68 they switch to vacuum motor, it was much better. Many dealers offered to switch over the 67’s to the 68 designs. The 68’s design work but had a limited life. 3-5 years depending on the condition. The diaphragms used to split due to age. In the late 70 several companies came out with kits that replaced the vacuum motors with better vacuum motors and a kit with metal gears for the guys who have Hi preformance engines with vacuum issues. To find a car with original working RS head lights would be a miracle to find one with the complete original setup not working is pretty rare. So in a purist’s eye non-functional/original RS lights would increase the value car and save him money if he was trying to build a “100 point” car.
