Default New Jersey DMV

I received an answer from the NJ DMV. They keep records for 8 years and then purge records.

Looks like the identity of my old camaro is lost to the ages.

Mine does the same thing but it goes onto microfilm after four years. You have to pay them $80 to get into the old records for a car that has not been registered in a while.

All I remember is the license plate number. I have no VIN or other info.

I misunderstood what you were doing.

A while ago the DMV's around here quit letting people search for cars by VIN or plate number for privacy reasons. I'm not sure if all of them had to do it or just the ones where I lived did it.

Without knowing a name & address of the person who bought it from you and tracking them down you will have a very hard time locating your car.

Default Vin / dmv

I sold the camaro in question in 1973. I do not remember the purchaser's name nor do I think he would still own it or remember who he sold it to.

I remember the license plate number (why I don't know) and thought if the NJ DMV had old records I could determine the VIN. If GM has old warranty repair info I may be able to find it that way although I doubt they keep records that old.

The hugger orange 1969 350 4BBL. , dual exhausts, trunk spoiler, black vinyl roof with standard black interior, 4 wheel non assisted drum brakes (really lousy!), 4spd Muncie, posi rear, no A/C.

I will keep looking.

That is a pretty unique combination of options which should narrow your search down quite a bit.

It would have been out of warranty when you sold it but are there any Chevy dealers in the area you sold it that would have been around back then? Maybe they have old service records that might lead you to an owners name or the VIN.

I was wondering the same thing about if any of the service repair shops might have any records on it. That is if they are still in business. Or how about the insurance agency the car was insured with? Are they still in business? Might be a long shot but worth looking into. Good luck!

All good suggestions. Unfortunately the Chevy dealer that I took the car to for service is long out of business. Maybe 30 years ago.

Same for insurance agent.

I would like a similar car. The important similarities would be an original hugger orange and 350 4 speed. Even if the engine has been changed. I prefer to "restore" a car its original color but would not be adverse to updating the brakes.
