need help in deciding for crate engine and transmission
hello guys!
I'm new here. I've always wanted to restore a classic camaro and finally decided to go ahead of it. Its going to be a 68 which would be used as an alternate daily driver. I'm tight on the budget so I will need all the help I can get to have this dream car up and running.
I'm a new to all these stuff so I decided to go for a crate engine. I've done my research and I'm staying away from crate engine rebuilders with bad reviews. The best I found so far is a crate engine from chevrolet performance.

It is cheap and brand new so it will probably save me a lot of headaches. What do you think?
For transmission, I prefer a low cost 3/4/5 speed stick shift. Any recommendations? Will it directly fit my planned crate engine? Also what would be the perfect rear end ratio for this?

What kind of budget are we talking? What kind of condition is the car in? Full restorations can get very expensive very fast. Have you thought about going with a modern LS series engine? I know I can get a low miles running LS1 for about 800$.

As far as the restoration part of the car, sit down and do some tight math on what you think everything will cost, parts and labor, then double it.
Then figure about how much time you plan to spend on the project, and triple or quadruple that.
And yeah what ^ said, what is your budget?

i won't go for a full restoration. condition of the car is ok except it doesn't have an engine and transmission. I can slowly work on the body and interior later on. maximum budget will be 10k. i prefer the 350ci engine since it looks like the original

I like the GM 350/290 crate; inexpensive and easy to build up if you want to.
For trans, I prefer a manual with an overdrive(5 or 6 speed).
As for rear gearing, I'm not sure it would be 'perfect' but I like 3:55 gear ratio.

A T-56 Magnum will give you two overdrive gears, and it's tough enough to handle pretty much anything you can throw at it. 700 lbs-ft of torque is its limit.
A new one will run you around $3k, as I recall.
Edit: This thing.
