Default Muncie 3 Speed

Hello everyone, I’m brand new to the forum. I presently do not own a Camaro but I have been looking for a while. I am curious about something that I hope someone can help with. Back in 1972 I bought a used 1969 Hugger Orange SS. It had a white interior with a 300HP 350. It also had a Muncie 3 speed manual on the floor. I loved the car! As I said, I have been looking for a similar car, but in all of my looking, I have not see one 1969 with a Muncie 3 speed. Were they that rare? Thanks.

No doubt pretty rare, the 4 speed only cost a little more and with the obvious performance benefits most people went that route if they bought a stick.
I really don't know why anyone would want a 3 speed myself but there were a few I guess.

Its just as easy to put a Muncie 4 speed as a 3 speed .Plus you have an extra gear. And if you can`t find one .You can always build a "clone" .

That's what I will most likely have to do. Finding a true SS with original paint code of 72 is pretty hard. As far as the transmission, I would love to find a Muncie 3 speed just so I could make the car as much like the one I owned, I know it's a long shot though. I still wonder why Chevy offered a floor mounted 3 speed in the first place.

Even if you found one that came with a 3 speed originally the odds of it not having been replaced by a 4 speed by now would be pretty slim.
I'd wager you'd almost have to find a one owner car that still had it, being it's basically a 50 year old car the odds of that are about as good as winning the powerball lottery. lol
Just finding a one owner 50 year old car of any kind is hard enough but a Camaro, an SS and with a factory 3 speed?
I bet you could probably count the factory 3 speed stick floor shift '69 SS Camaros made on one had and have fingers left over.
You can build one easy enough though, here's a tranny. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Muncie-318-...4383.l4275.c10

According to the Camaro White Book, there were 3,079 Camaros built in 1969 with a special 3-speed transmission (RPO MC1) and were available with the SS or LM1 options. There were 34,932 Super Sport (RPO Z27) built the same year and the base car was equipped with a 350 cu in 300 hp engine and a floor-mounted 3-speed transmission. The 350 cu in 225 hp LM1 RPO had 10,406 units built. At the most then, less than 10% of the SS's could have come with a 3-speed trans, but when the LM1 cars are added, that percentage has to be far lower.

I had no idea what I had back in the day. I doubt that many of those cars still exist, sad. Thanks!!
