1969 Camaro Project
I am restoring a 1969 RS Camaro which I am going to sell. I bought this car and discovered after looking at everything on the car that a number of upgrades from a Z28 were added to this vehicle. These upgrades include the center console gauge package, Muncie 4-sp., disc brakes, suspension components, cowl hood, rearspoilerand emblems of course. I have had all of the body work done and the car is now nothing but primer. The vehicle has the headlight package and all new interior. The engine and transmission are not original but I went through both of them. The completely rebuilt engine is a 350 with aluminum heads, headers, MSD ignition and is estimated to have horsepower in the range of 375 horse. I have a couple of questions for selling this vehicle. Should I paint the car (original paint was root beer brown) or leave it primer to allow someone to paint it like they want it? My other question is what is a realistic value for this car without paint? If I put a fancy paint job on the car what is worth after that? I keep getting mixed messages from a number of sources & friends. Some tell me that people like to see the body work and that it has been done right. Some feedback from folks could help me out. Thanks!

I would say to paint the car, either the original color or something else. A car in primer suggests that you are trying to hide something, because a dull finish doesn't show imperfections as well ( and people aren't willing to pay as much). The only true way to see the bodywork would be to leave it bare metal, which isn't practical. The original color wasn't very popular in '69 and still isn't. Since you are going to sell anyway, and it isn't "numbers matching", I would paint it a more desirable color. Make sure the body is done right though, and a new shiny paint job will sell the car for you.

There should be a number opposite the 711.
Otherwise you have a V8 built in the 2nd week of march. It has black (711) interior. If the j174 is closer to being between the 711 and 3b it might be the number, kind of off set. But it still wouldnt make sence unless you had a typo and meant 714, which is yellow exterior.
At any rate, even with the mods that the car has it isnt an original Z/28 (absolutely nothing to feel bad or get discouraged about!) Had it been an original it would be worth alot, but you could sell it (after its been painted - my answer to your question btw) as an advertised'Clone Z/28' ensure you dont try to sell it as an actual.
Either way you will get more for it than leaving it primmered. Who would buy a car for 10k that was primmed when they could by a finnished one for the same price?

I agree with you on not listing it as a Z28 and I am not sure I even would list it as a Z28 clone. Might possibly list it as an RS with additional items.Appreciate the input. I double checked the number on the plate. It is either a J174 or a J1Z4. Had someone else look at it too make sure my eyes weren't fuzzy. I have never been able to verify what these numbers meant. Any help would be appreciated.
There is not a number opposite of the 711 just the letters PNT which I assume would give me the exterior color for paint.

as far as paint goes, what do you consider a fancy paintjob? a basic qualityjob, WITH NO BODYWORK, can start over $5k and only go up from there. if you do a cheap job it will show and people will wonder where else you have cheaped out.
when a body is left in primer (or with any dull surface), it hides a lot of bodywork and some will wonder what you are hiding.
lots of times if you have to pay someone to paint a car for you, you don't always get all the money value bakc that you put into it
the bottom line is, do it as you want because there are too many pros and cons to list on an online forum
