Just bought my first first gen camaro. I've had almost every gm product but never a early camaro. It's a 68 that in the early 80's someone decided that adding a Cadillac grill,lights and 500 engine too it would be a sweet idea. So I know determining if its a ss is difficult to impossible without n the original engine, but....it has an ss hood,has the heater core outlets in the center of the heater core box and has a 12 bolt with multi leaf springs. Any thoughts? What else could I look for?

 

Look for a proportioning valve on the driver side of the subframe. You should be able to just lean down and see it. It's about mid door. This was only in factory 12 bolt cars in 68. Other than that there is no real way to tell if its a ss car without the original motor or documentation. I've heard another clue is if the car still has the factory tire sticker on the inside of the glovebox could point to a ss car depending on a certain sticker.

 

Of course, having any of the above possible tell-tale signs can only support a hunch, not offer any concrete proof since anything on the car could have been replaced by parts from another to use for repairs.

 

Multileaf rear springs, 28 coils on the hood hinges vice 26 coils for a standard hood, posi rear axle. A welded 3X5 plate on the rear frame rail behind the tire for dual exhaust hangar. Front disc brakes with disc brake emblem on pedal.

Check over at www.camaros.org for good reading. Seems 4P would be on the trim tag next to master cylinder, maybe.

 

disc brakes were an option not standard on ss cars. the 4p tag was only 67. 68 trim tags are pretty much useless in determining if the car is a ss or a rs or a z28. all the trim tag will have is color of exterior and interior and when and where it was built. I don't know if the dual exhaust was standard on a ss car or not. and many non ss cars could of had that optioned on it as well.

 

Well it has 28 coils in the hood spring,has the pro portioning valve has five leaf springs and disc breaks. I realize I'll never be able to prove to anyone it's an SS without the original engine but based on the fact that I bought the car from a guy who bought it in 79 and he didn't add any of these parts it seems to me it's an ss. Plus it has the big lock heater core....only ss models came with a big lock correct?
