Default How to remove external voltage regulator

Hi, I’ve looked through other posts and haven’t found an answer to my specific question. It has to do with an external voltage regulator that still looks to be wired up in my 67 even though I have an alternator with an internal regulator. I’ve only had the car 3-4 months and not sure what all was done to it prior, but it looks like some one installed a new SI regulator and left the external one in place. I’d like to remove the external regulator, but with my limited wiring knowledge I’m not sure if that possible or how to do it. The alternator is a 78 amp 12 SI (delco #1105652) and is configured with a 3-wire setup. I’ve seen videos of people converting from 3-wire to 1-wire setups by unplugging and jumping the wires in the harness, but not sure if I need (or can) do the same thing here? I’d prefer to remove the wires and regulator completely to clean things up if they are not needed. Any thoughts / advice?

Here is how the alternator is wired:

I am not one to do the 1 wire Alt mod on these 1st gens. Looks like someone just used an adapter from 3 wire to 1 on the Alt they put on

You can just unplug the connector on side and bottom of voltage regulator and start the car to see if all is OK. Charging light does not come on, all lights work, horn works. If so then just unscrew the 3 bolts that hold the VR to core support. You would still be left with the wires going to the plugs fr VR...I suspect just cutting those may cause other issues so ideally someone who had done the complete VR delete & 1 wire Alt mod can advise

Maybe previous owner had a charging problem and didn't know if it was VR or Alt so just bought a single wire ALT and adapter instead

I prefer the solid-state VR made by Tuff Stuff for around $16 on Amazon (made in USA) and a standard 3 wire Alt

Thanks. To be clear I don't want to do a one wire either and don't think I have one. As you can see in my pic I have the battery wire plus the exciter and sensor wires.

one of the 3 wires on the stock connector is not connected via that adapter (looks like the white wire of the stock connector is not connected). Not sure if this is a "fix" for the model of alt you have but if your battery is chargeing, voltage dash light is not on that whatever that set up is, is working

Thats why I suggested just unplugging the VR to see if it triggers the dash light or with a DVM you are not seeing the battery being charged (should read about 14.5 vdc) on the DVM

or just buy the correct 3 wire ALT and ditch that adapter plug

This is what the stock ALT looks like plugged in (3 wire).

Thanks SoCal67. I appreciate the suggestions. I'll give those a shot while chasing down some other grimlins.

For anyone else wanting to do this in the future, this guy does a good job explaining how to completely remove an external VR:
. I haven't tried it yet, but it makes sense.
