I just paid for a 67 coupe a few weeks ago, the seller did not have the title
and apparently neither did the guy he bought it from.
it has been used as a drag car for the past 10 years (no tags needed)
does anyone have any experience in getting a new title for a vehicle that apparently is no longer in any states system.

Your car is still in some state's system, it didn't disappear. I've been through this before, and it can be a mess. Best thing to do is contact your DMV and try to apply for a lost title. The only hangup is that the state would send the duplicate copy of title to the last "legal" owner (the last person to have it titled). You would then need to work something out with the owner on record (if they're still alive, or can be found) to get the title back from them. Technically, the person whose name is on the title is the "legal" owner.

Hopefully the title isn't owned by a bank with money owed against it.
I grabbed a free pickup camper off craigslist a while back (still in my yard) and I have not been able to get a title or even get the name of the last registered owner to try and get a release of interest.
Big mistake on my part,I petitioned the state for info and was denied.
They say I have to call a towing company to remove it from my property and that they will have to put it up for public action.
It's a damn old fixer upper and I doubt the towing company will even come get it for nothing,it's fairly solid but needs some work so it's not likely worth the towing companys time to come get it.
