When I lived in NY my buddy had a pretty big shop (you could fit 2 semi trucks in it and still have some room) he was running a gas heater at 50°. After about 3 months he never turned it on again (too expensive) and installed a wood burning stove. Kept the shop at about 70° for pennies.

yea, I use to work in a 20,000 sq ft shop. the owner put in nice gas heaters throughout. it was so expensive to run them that he shut them down in a month and brought in Barrel Heaters (thats what I call them). Basically two 55 gallon drums, sideways... one of top of the other. They put out TONS of heat for dirt cheap. so, If you already bought it and hooked it up, then Id say go ahead and use it but only when you are out there. maybe go out and turn it on an hour ahead of time or something to get it warmed up.

Set your grill in the garage and turn it on.

I never heat my garage unless I'm in there working. We rarely get much below freezing in the winter, so it's not needed to keep the car warm.
