Default Fuel filler neck replacement

My fuel cap doesn't seat well at all so I was told I should replace the filler neck. Question is, can this be done without dropping the tank? Should I also replace the outer sleeve at the same time?

if I remember correctly when I did mine on my 68 6 years ago I think you had to drop the tank at least a little to get to the rubber connector. it a big pain in the butt job to replace it. and by the other sleeve you mean the rubber cover in the trunk that's under the metal plate cover?

I think so? I was looking on Ricks and they mention replacing the sleeve if you're replacing the filler neck. I haven't taken the metal cover off yet to see what's behind it.

there is a thin rubber pipe that covers the metal fuel neck in the trunk. also what style gas cap are you running? try looking on ebay for a NOS one they seem to fit better than the new ones.

Yes, NOS filler tube is better than a repo.
Tube can be replaced without dropping tank.
Remove license plate, loosen hose clamps, remove four sheet metal screws on the tail panel, remove/replace tube.
You could coat the inside of the hose with petro jelly for easy slide-on install.

Two inch ID hose can be bought at most any NAPA store by the foot, for maybe under $10.

Get new filler tube, screw on gas cap and blow into tube.
Should not leak. If it does, get a new cap.

Do you know that there is a deep and shallow gas cap that looks the same and aligns up with the filler neck? One cap fits snug and one lose. Before you go to all that trouble, is it possible you have the wrong cap?
