Ford 9"
Question.. I just brought a 68 camaro.. The car is less than stock.. But solid.. Originally from Cali..I intend to bring it back a liitle.. want something solid dependable and somewhat quick...
My question is it now has a 9" spool with 4.11 .. and want to change it back to Posi.. What needs to be done.. Do I need to replace the entire chunk or can I swap parts back in.. If so what would be the most economical way...
Any help would be appreciated
Thank you

A spool is a posi, you want to put a limited slip back in it? Yes you can replace the spool with a limited slip without changing the whole thing. You may want to change gears also if you plan on doing any driving in the car.
You can pull the thrid member and remove the spool, then just rebuild it as a limited slip. That will be the cheapest way to go too. Or you might even place an ad locally on Craigslist to swap the third member with someone who wants to go racing and would love a currently set up 9" carrier with spool and 4:56 gears. That would be even cheaper!
If you are going to take the 9" apart dont just go with a track loc posi...for another 150 bucks move up to a true trac posi it handles tons more power then a regular posi especially if you are running a big block or a small block with tons of torque ...go on justrearends.com they have everything
A spool is not a posi, and a posi is not a spool. Posi (Positraction) is GM's own name for limited slip. They're the same thing, although there are a few different styles of limited slip setups. A spool is a solid ring gear carrier that locks the two axles together. There's absolutely no differential action at all, so it isn't made to be street friendly. Some off-roaders like to weld the conventional spider gears to the carrier as a cheap way to get the same locked effect. You may be able to reuse your ring and pinion gears, but you'll need to find new guts for the center section. Or, you could scour ebay or local swap meets to look for a complete 9" center section. I usually spot them every time I go to a swap (a coupla few times a year).
