Default Engine won't start

Hey guys, I have a 67 camaro with an 383 stroker eng. I replaced a battery that was bad. After I installed the battery, I turned the key and it would not start. I checked the cables from the started and all cables are connected and grounded (I took the started off earlier to put a thicker shim on, so battery cables are tight). Battery is grounded to frame. Alternator cable is connected.

Can anyone give me any advise? I'm out of ideals.

Ronnie

Moved this thread to the correct section (1st gen).
Try putting the battery on a charger for a while. "New battery" doesn't always necessarily mean fully charged, or one with enough oomph to crank the engine over.

Is it turning over at all? (any noise, clicking, etc?)
If you are getting nothing at all, check the voltage in the battery, check the starter and make sure it is okay, and then move on to the ignition system.

What were the symptoms that led you to figure the old battery was dead? If the starter was just going click, and it's still doing the same thing now, it could be the starter is bad.
1) Was the starter turning the engine over before you removed/shimmed/reinstalled it?
2) Was it right after that when the battery went "dead"?
3) Did you test, or have the battery tested to know it was in fact "dead"?

Response to your questions:

The old battery was a little over 4 yrs old, and was tested at auto parts store.

After installing new battery, I attempted to start the engine, but it would only make a click noise ( it made the click noise just once, and wouldn't do anything afterwards ).

I also took the starter in to a high performance shop. They tested the cylinoid on the starter ( which is a high performance starter ), which tested fine. sorry about spelling.

The click noise made when trying to start the car was heard before I shimmed the starter.

Don't disconnect anything. Run a jumper cable directly from the negative battery terminal to one of the mounting bolts on the starter. If the starter works, you have a bad ground issue. If still nothing, we need to look elsewhere.

Any fuses blown? One click, and then nothing, sounds like either a short, bad ground, or bad ignition system.
Process of elimination;
1. Your battery is good
2. Your starter is good
Only leaves the wiring or ignition system
