Distributor for a crate motor
#11
mine is a pertronix unit with a clear cap i found somewhere??
will probably change the cap back as it seems more brittle than other colored caps?
i run mine up to 6500-7000 rpm and dont seem to have any issues??
i have about an 1/8 inch of clearance but notice i have the addition of the stainless steel plate on the firewall that shortens the gap!!

you can also get by running the points distributor with an msd 6al box. grandfathers 1933 ford pickup is set up the same way. and has been like that for over 15 years and has run great and he raced it every wens. night

Thanks Camaro 69, I did come across this a few months back and have already switched my vacuum line to the manifold vacuum and noticed the difference.
Thanks Camaroboy68ss, I was hoping to find if anyone has used an MSD Ignitor with a points distributor before and what the pros and cons were.
Maybe someone can answer this for me. I've have both the original points distributor as well as a Mallory #5048201 Magnetic mechanical advance distributor. Vac advance I'm told will give me better mileage, what exactly would the Mallory have to offer?

If you have a non-points distributor, the settings will hold a lot longer than on points. The little block on the points that rub against the center cam wears out in about 3,000 miles, changing both the dwell and the timing. If you are using the points simply as a trigger device for an ignition box, dwell doesn't matter so much, up to a point, but timing still does.
