Default Dash Tach

I'm new to this forum and have a 1969 Camaro SS.

In the dash I have a speedometer, a gas gauge and a blank space in between the two.

I would like to replace the gas gauge (I have another one on the console) with a tachometer and fill the blank space with a clock.

Can I install the tach and clock without having to replace the circuit board or do I also need a new circuit board? Is this a relatively easy job or is it a real pain?

Thanks for your help.

You will need a new circuit board. Along with the wiring you will also need to cut out the back of the old gas guage hole out for the tach. They have templates for that. In other words probably not an overnight job.

I am actually doing this today!

69's don't have a circuit board. Since you already have the console gauges, then this is not a huge job, but definately a whole day. The tach hole needs to be cut out of the carrier. There is a template available, but you just need to ge the holes lined up to mount the tach. Some guys do this from the front without removing the carrier. I am doing the whole install, so have removed the console to put in the gauge pak, and the dash pad to remove the cluster.

Basically: The clock is available with a piggy back harness that joins into the pink wire for lighting, and the power line, orange for power and a black for ground. If your dash is Original, then there is a face plate that you cout out. The original dash for clock/centre gas gauge has a metal bracket for support. If it does not have one you can fab one up for support otherwise when cutting it out, it could crack. Small metal strip, 8 1/4" long, holes spaced 7 13/16" ith 3/16" holes. So you need the clock, the bezel, and a harness.

The tach goes where the gas gauge was. There are templates for this online. Do a google. The tach gets a tan wire out to the fuse block, then from the engine side you run a wire from there to the coil negative. Here you already have a wire for the lamp, which you could run over to the clock.

Good luck, not that difficult

Thanks for the info.

I'm going to give it a try.
