I went through the ride height dilema when I replaced springs on my Camaro last year. I really liked the ride height with 40 yr. old springs, but didn't want to put them back in with everything else getting new parts.
I went to the local spring builder (Oregon Spring) and got their input. The guy at the counter suggested that instead of going BBC coils up front, I go SBC with A/C coils, and then 2" lowering in the rear 4 leaf set. It ended up being as close to what I had before as I could have ever hoped for.
If you've got local resources that deal hands on with suspension or springs, they're a valuable, free resource!

Actually it was really easy to level them and lower them using a torch. Pretty much a gradual process, and you can heat a little, then check, and add more heat until it matches perfectly. Once you've done a couple it's even easier to predict.

Cutting your springs will lower your vehicle, but it will also effect your front end geometry, potentially to the point that you cannot properly align the front end. By cutting the springs, you increase the spring rate, making the ride firmer. This can be good for racing, but it can be a harsh ride on the street. I have read on other 1st gen sites that lowering springs can cause actual interference and that the right way to go is lowering spindles.
