Crash Course
Wow 68RSSSCamaro, thanks for all the information and suggested literature. Your comments on the Big Blocks and Z/28:RS:SS are very helpful and I am appreciative of the information.
Scooch - Although I have yet to read it, that link looks like some very great information as well. I wasnt having a lot of success finding a site like that which covered the basics in a concise manner, so thank you. Fantasitc.
I really dont know if I will buy anything at Barrett Jackson or not. However, I thought it would be a lot of fun to go, and since I'm going, I'm going prepared to bid incase I find something that I really like at a price in my range. If not, I'll just enjoy the experience and start shopping around otherplaces, but I definitely want to pickup one of these cars. I've been doing as much research as I can ahead of time, I already have an extensive document on recent Camaro selling prices at previous BJ events and am also monitoring price ranges on ebay. There seems to be a sweet spot in the 30-35K range with some nice restored first gens. Obviously there are a lot higher as well.
I love classic muscle cars, I'm just not the type of car guy who is driven to know every single thing about them. I just like something I can enjoy for what it is. I also have a project car I am working on slowly (78 Trans Am), I just thought I might splurge a little bit this one time.

So I went and test drove a 2010 V8 Camaro w/ 6-speed manual today. Sweet Ride. As you might imagine, the sales guy worked real hard to convince me of the positives of a new ride, when I told him I was also considering a 67-69 resto.
It got me thinking. I've assumed that a nice classic car with a restored engine should be almost as reliable as a new modern day engine. But I realize that's probably not the case, and to a degree I am likely wrong. Does anyone have input on that sort of thinking? How reliable are restored classic car engines?

My car isn't a Barrett Jackson car by no means, its had a lot of work put into it motor work, total suspension restoration, and a few other amendities added and I would feel as comfortable driving it anywhere as I would a 2010 model anything else. I drove it 3 times this year to San Antonio Texas from So. Georgia ( 1000 miles each way) and have had it up the east coast a couple times with not one incident other than a flat tire in Louisianna. I wouldn't hesitate taking it anywhere , anytime...
I thought I would post and give an update for everyone who helped me with information and experience. I didnt end up buying a car. Most of the Camaros there were a bit higher than I had hoped to spend. The closest was this one:

But it had some paint cracking in the window trim wells so I didnt think it was worth the price. Although as you all Know, I am pretty green so I could have been wrong. Most of the best Camaros where in the 50K+ range (You can see all this information on the barrett-jackson.com website). Now I still want a 1st gen Camaro, so its time to start looking on Ebay and other places for the right one for me. I have learned a ton over the past week, thanks to this experience and of course you guys here. If anyone knows good places to keep an eye for nice Camaros, let me know.
If there are any celeb junkies in here, I saw Kurt Busch (Nascar Driver) at an invite-only party while I was there ( I was close enough to touch him, but I left him his personal space and let him enjoy the party, lol ). I also found myself standing right next to Rick Hendrick (Nascar Owner) during one of the Camaro auctions. I'm not a celeb-nut kinda guy, but it was cool even being there in a casual environment.
If you love cars, and want a real nice treat, I definitely recommend this experience. If you can, spend the $400 and register as a bidder. Its worth it even if you don't buy. I think me and my guest had that much in free drinks at the bidder party and open bar during the event.
