Cowl tag rivet question

Anyone know how to tell if a cowl tag has been replaced? I believe the rear side of the rivet is different when replaced???
Need to try and verify that a z28 is in fact a z28.
Any hints for other things would help too. I know to look for disk brakes, proportioning valve under the door, and I believe the speedo should be on the passenger side of the steering coloumn.

Actually the cowl tag wont really give you alot of info on weather its a z or not. the broadcast sheet/build sheet is more specific. I am at work now and dont have the publications that I would to referance this, but I am pretty sure.... of the top of my head that the cowl tag wont be that specific.
Check some of the links posted in the sticky for info till I can get to the pubs.

Actually, the trim tag will help, if it's a 67 or 69 Z28, but you didn't say what year yours is. A 69 would have an X33 or X77 code towards the lower right of the tag. The 67 Z28 tag will have a "4L" code towards the lower left, designating a 302 (Z28) engine. The 68 tag has no Z28 codes.
Even if a tag checks out, that's no guarantee that the car hasn't been forged with a phony one. Correct appearing rivets can be bought, but the installation process is something that not everyone can duplicate and make look "factory".
There should be a partial VIN stamped on the pad of the 302 block, forward of the pass. side head. Those numbers should match the serial # portion on the VIN tag. Stamped on that same pad on the block there should be either a "DZ" suffix code (late 68 & all 69), or an "MP" (1967), or an "MI" (1968), or an "MO" (67 & early 68).

Looked at the car I posted about yesterday. Never got to the cowl tag to check it as most other issues failed the sniff test. Car had 12 bolt rear but 5 leaf springs, shift tunnel was cut with a torch for the 4 speed and hand no nuts welded under the mount holes, no tach, black grill, no brake prop. valve under the drivers floor...........
Guy was p-o'd when I stated it was no z car. Oh well, I guess I wouldn't be happy if the project I paid top dollar for was suddenly worth 1/4 what I paid.
Here is the expired auction id link:
