It will all depend on how much highway cruising you do and rear tire heigth. If this is really a street driven car the 4.11s will begin annoying you quickly. I have to agree with the guys who said 3.55s or 3.73s. If most driving is at highway speed the 3.73s will be fun for a while and then start annoying you. You will not loose that much acceleration with the 3.55s and it will be much more streetable. Check out the rpm/mph chart on our website and play with some different combinations. When it comes time for a posi, drop us an email and we WILL save you some cash....Toni

most V-8 motors with manual trans came with 3:73 or 4:11 gears from the factory, automatics came with 3:55 or lower with the 2:73 as the norm for automatics. The extra fourth gear allowed for the higher gears, compared to the two and three gear automatics. I agree with the concesus of the 3:55.

Four speed manual, three speed automatic, and two speed automatic....all have a 1:1 final gear drive. However, the trans with more gears has a lower first gear ratio, as well as the intermediate gears being different ratios.

my uncle work for GM for thirty five years, just stuff he taught us over the years, back in the sixties you could order your car with alot of different combo's but unless you ordered it differnt most all manuals came with 3:73 or 4:11. Were talking chevelle's, Camaro's, GTO ect, not your grandfathers Buick. Could be wrong but he was seldom mistaken about anything GM.

You could probably special order with those gears but most came with a lot taller gear whether auto or manual

I have 3:73 with a 26 1/2" tall tire and they suck on the highway. I never used to worry about it too much but now that I like taking my car on longer road trips it's gotten old.

I am going with 3:42 come spring time. I have had 3:55 in the past, but that's just not enough of a difference for me, especially since I'm going to be dropping down below a 26" tall tire soon

It used to be a 6 cylinder car... but I digress. I read somewhere that a close ratio transmission needs taller rear gears like a 3.73. I was wondering what a good choice for gears would be. I want that blast off feeling but I want to drive the car all around and not have the thing screaming in my ear at 55mph. My buddy says run 4.11s? I was wondering if I could get away with a set of 3.55's and still have fun with it and also have an all around drivable car? Thanks guys and gals I thought the urinal was funny its not relevant to the post LMAO!!!
All 4-speed muncie ratios end at 1:1, so close ratio first gear won't be as deep. Close ratio is a great trans for small or big block, its better suited With 3:52, 3:73, 4.11 and in a performance engine and peakier" curves, so the close ratio will provide less RPM drop between gears and let you keep the engine in the "sweet spot."
If you want the blast of feeling go with the 3:73 or 4:11 if you want the best of both worlds, highway /street stick with the 3:52, good luck
