Bad Fuel Gage?

After running out of gas for the second time, I've decided to do something about my fuel gage. This is a console mounted fuel gage in a 1969 Pace Car. I installed the console and all gages new a few years ago. Everything worked fine for a while but the fuel gage just reads past Full all the time now.
I have the gage out of the car - what is a good methodology for testing this? I doubt the sending unit is bad.
Thanks for any help.

Your gauge should read E with no power to it. To test the gauge though, hook 12 volts to the positive terminal, and connect the other terminal directly to ground. The gauge should read all the way to empty (no, I didn't mean full). If that doesn't work, you need a new gauge.

This is a very common issue. Here is a link to how to diagnose and fix

If your gauge doesn't react like I described above, you don't need to dig any further into your car's wiring system, it's the gauge.
But, if the gauge checks out good, you'll need to go on a wiring witch hunt. I had these bookmarked:
Troubleshoot Fuel Gauge

yeah it sounds like something bad with the actual gauge or the wiring. if it was always reading empty then i would suggest that the float in the tank might be bad. just went throught that with a 61 impala ss the brass float had 3 cracks in it
