Default 8.2 to 8.5

I have a 67 camaro with a 8.2 gear. Would like to upgrade to a 8.5 gear.

Will the bigger ring gear fit in the stock housing?

If you mean will 8.2 fit in 8.5, or the 8.5 parts go in a 8.2 no, the parts are not interchangable.

Your carrier in the 8.5 will dictate the ring and pinion choice you can use. 2.56 and numerically lower cases and then there is the 2.73 and numerically higher cases.

8.2 and 8.5 are the sizes of the rear-ends (im assuming.... never heard of 8.2, but then again ive only worked with 7.5, 8.5, 9, and 12bolt. lord knows there are many other sizes). you must choose a gear that fits inside your rear end. as far as I know, there are no gears that interchange between rear end sizes

Not directed at just you but everyone else if they want to know.

The 8.2 was the early 10 bolt used in GM cars . there where three styles. the 55-64 Chevy. Then the Buick Olds Pontiac (BOP) from 64-71 and also a 64-72 Chevy version.

It's a solid rear end that has many aftermarket parts and kits available.

No , you will need the whole housing, not just the inside parts.
The 8.5 from a 72 and up Nova andVenturawill bolt right in to your 67 Camaro and are almost as strong as a 12 bolt

wez67,
All the above posts are true. You will need to finda new 8.5" housing. 1st gen camaro'smeasured 60" axle to axle, and there are a few 8.5"s out there that are direct bolt in's (1968-1979Chevy II/Nova).Below is a list of a few others that are close. You shouldn't spend more than $100 for the housing if you are going to rebuild the insides. You can find gears sets (3.42 runs well in 1st gens) for about 100-150. Then if you want a posi differential you will be spending another couple hundred. Another important note, there are different housings for gear sets 2.54 and lower (series 2) and 2.73 and higher ratios (series 3). Hope this helps.

to expand on what SS396 said, you should figure out what series gears you want to go with. this way when you buy your new rearend, even if the gears aren't exactly what you want, at least you'll have the right carrier to put your desired gears in
