Default 69 windshield/headliner windlace

Need some help. Working on a 69 Camaro. Ordered new windlace that goes around the headliner-sides, rear, & front. THe front is a problem. Pulled the front glass cause it appeares that the windlace snaps in over the glass channel. THere is no "slot" for the windlace that I can see. Shouldn't I be able to put the windlace on with the front glass in place, like I did for the rear glass windlace?
I suspect that someone has cut the metal that was the bottom of the slot out (rust) and glued in a new headliner right over it.
I've probed the channel, there is no slot, the whole top channel is a 1/4" thick. Am I missing something?

you should have no problems putting that in with the glass already in the car. if you can't just slap it in there easily, there is something else going on
