Default 69 Camaro starter won't start when hot

My 69' Camaro, 396 with high torque starter, starts every time on the first turn of the key when cold. After being turned off, the car will not restart when the engine is hot. The starter makes the infamous clicking noise. Suggestions from others have been: wrap the headers, wrap the starter/solenoid, and install larger gauge wiring from the battery to the starter. If you guys/gals were taking this problem on, which would you do first? Second? and so on. Thanks.

You're having the famous starter solenoid "heat soak" problem. I don't like the look of wrapped headers myself, so I would first put a heat shield on top of the starter. You didn't mention that on your options list, but it was factory to have one to shield exhaust heat from the starter. A lot of guys left it off the first time the starter was removed, wondering why GM put a worthless piece of tin there in the first place? That is, until you find out the hard way why it was there.

I would either do what was suggested above or just wrap the starter

Default starter update

I looked at NPD for the starter heat shield which was $169.99 for an orginal. I passed on it, and instead ordered a remanufactured solenoid heat sheild and wrap for the starter from Year One for about $60.00 total. Should arrive in a week or two and I will let you know how it goes. Thanks for the help.
