68 Camaro makes a clacking sound when it starts up ???

hi guys
when i turn the key of the camaro she makes a strange noise as shes starting up.
sounds like something is catching or cracking inside the starter motor. like maybe teeth catching and grinding sort of a noise just as the starter engages

as soon as i let go of the key shes idles just fine. nice and quiet. its only when i turn the key
any ideas?
thanks guys for all the advice:icon_couchhide:

I'll take a wild guess.....Starter Solenoid. If you don't mind a little arching there is a way to check:

could it be a case of the flywheel not engaging properly and thats why its making the clacking noise?

That's what it "sounds" like to me. Although I can't hear it, so it's just a best guess based on the description.
If you were able to post a sound byte, it would probably help.
