Default 1st gen rear end?

New guy here, so I hope you smart guys can give me a hand. I have a 12 bolt in my 1968 Camaro. I noticed that there is an off set on the wheels One side sticks out more that the other.I checked the purchesand they look like they are factory. They are very clean.Same tire/wheel size and all. One of my friends told me that that is how they came from the factory. Is this right. Did Chevy do this from the factory? If they did than Why?

I have 2 '68's and a '69 Camaro and all three appear to be centered under the car. Maybe yours is shifted or something.Measure the distance of the perches from the backing plate. If it is the same then you need to loosen up everything ( u-bolts, shackles , etc.) and adjust the rear end to center it.

I concur. That sounds a little weird...

mine is offset to the passenger side as well. Really hard to notice though, its only about 1/4 to 1/2 and inch difference. I've seen this often though, so im not worried about it.

Every 1st gen Camaro and Firebird I have seen is that way.
Ircyklopshave you measured yours to see? I'm not doubting you, just curious.Like what was said its only about 1/2", with factory tires its hard to see, but when you stuff the wheel wells full of tire you notice quick like I did.

you probably want to measure from the center of the rear end to the spring perches, to see if they are off. you really don't want to measure from the outside in, because if you are already having problems, you don't know it the axle tubelengths are at issue also. the center of the pumpkin is a solid dimension that won't change no matter what gets done to the rearend

unlike the others that posted, I have never really seen this problem before

a couple of other possible things:

1) have the quarters been replaced beforeon your car? they could have possibly not installed them the same. this happens more often than you would think

2) are you sure the rims are the exact same? it would be very easy for two different rims, with different backspacing, to have been put on the car over the years. one rim could have gotten wrecked and they just replaced it with whatever they had at the time and never even bothered to check their backspacing.

sometimes it's the simple things that get overlooked

I agree with you 1969SS.
There could be alot of other possibilities. One that I have seen is someone broke an axle, and when they replaced the axle, it was longer than the stock. Measuring from center of the pumpkin to the mounting face of the axles should also be the same dimension. This is because the axles are retained in the carrier in the pumpkin by the C clips, and since the axles are solid, the overall dimension cannot change even if the axle tubes get a bit out of whack.
