maybe, typically chevy reserves any z badging for its performance line. from what i heard it was classically a striped out race version
it may have had limited motor options though, due to racing regulations, like capping at 305 for example, i cant remember which race does that, but thats the reason for performance 5.0s. I dont know if you could get the firebreathing big blocks in a z from the factory. but thats just my own experience talking. i always see the SS's with huge motors and people paying through the nose for them. but then again I cant recall seeing any 1st gen Zs personally.... i even had to google to see if they made them lol. im used to the RS and SS

I think so.
Honestly, it makes me a wee bit upset that they're just gonna stuff a big engine in it for the Z. Back in the day the Z was a track car. It had a high-revving 302, and was meant for the twisties. GM should return to that line of thought - drop the weight to around 3000, and give us a rev-happy v8! THAT would be nostalgia! :P
