Default This whole Oil Life thing....

Ok guys, I am used to getting my oil change about every 3K miles. I am in a '10 SS and I am told to change the oil when the oil life hits 20-25%. I am at 7500 miles and still at 53% oil life.
This. Is. Weird.

Am I doing the right thing?

Just so I dont look completely ridiculous, know that my last vehicles were an F150 (oil change at 3K) and a 69 LS1 (add oil....well, all the freakin' time).

The oil itself can last a long time before it degrades, but it is collecting dirt and metal particles which are too small for the filter to catch. This stuff circulates and causes engine wear. Unless you do mostly long distance driving at highway speeds, 3K is a good time to change oil. It also depends on how long you intend to keep the car.

If not a lot of driving miles go to a schedule of every six months or what you like. I would Not go by the gage that gives you your oil life schedule.

According to your warranty, you only need to change the oil by the time it hits 0%. Depending on your driving conditions and style, that could be 1500 to 15000 miles. I tell my customers to ignore the light. We reccomend under 4k on conventionals and under 5k on synthetics.
