Radio and display
I checked the fuses in all locations. It was hard to do anything with the tabs. Still a problem. I made an appointment with the dealer.
one thing I learned: pull the side door straight out on the interior dash fuse area or you’ll damage a clip, as I did; and Chevrolet doesn’t include “spare” fuses where indicated in each fuse box. I had one spare fuse under the hood but nothing at the dash or trunk.

As it stands now, the dealer states that the alternator is spiking and needs to be replaced. The problem goes away when they disconnect the alternator, according to them. They mentioned that they contacted Chevrolet tech for assistance. Anyway, they ordered the part and I’m waiting for the repair to be completed. I did contact Chevrolet for cost relief because of only 50K miles and 100% dealer serviced. I’m waiting on a reply there also.
Dealer stated the alternator swap didn’t resolve the problem. Fortunately they returned the part and are going back to the drawing board. They are working with GM tech support that recommended the alternator swap. At this point I’m into $250 in diagnostics cost. The cost would have been $1,100 for the alternator swap. They called me again and are now saying it is a radio module or something like that (I’m waiting for a response with the exact part name.) They state that’s what the next level GM tech support is saying now. $1,000 cost, and like last time can’t guarantee it will fix it. This time though they said they can’t return the part, so I’d be on the hook even if it didn’t fix it. And I’m up to $350 to walk away with diagnostic cost. I called GM again about this even though they have refused any cost sharing so far. This time stating that this is a dealer service issue now. I also called the dealer GM. I’m waiting for a call back from both. Dealer not guaranteeing their work and charging for diagnostics when they can’t say they diagnosed the problem is a problem.
They admit it is changing parts to find it, and this is GM tech support also. I had the dealer order the part because they are giving me a good will cost sharing credit. Until I was offered the good will credit, I was considering trying to install a third party (PAC) unit myself, not that I’m comfortable with electronic work. More to come.

Update: the dealer replaced the radio/HVAC control head today. They come from a GM approved electronics company via an exchange program. It did not resolve the problem. Fortunately the dealer paid for the part, I paid the labor. The dealer has been working with Chevrolet’s technical assistance center TAC and now TAC is recommending proceeding with a radio replacement with no guarantee it will resolve the issue. And of course Chevrolet is not guaranteeing their diagnosis. Coincidentally I informed the dealer a few weeks ago while waiting for the head that I removed the radio fuse so that I could use the car without the speakers crackling. I informed them that the fan, blinker sound, indicator lights stopped going in and out, and worked fine. I was surprised the screen went blank though because I believe there is a fuse just for the display. Anyway, I need to figure out what to do. The radio replacement at the dealer would be about $600. The part is $428. I could get a less expensive replacement and install it myself but all the sites state that dealer programming is needed. Anyone know about that? Will replacements need reprogramming 20 years from now?
sure sounds like they is doing all they can to help. 200 bucks to install and program sounds pretty good. probly cost 200 just to program at any other shop. down side is you dont know if that's gonna fix it.
