Oil Life Reset

Oil Life Reset
Hi All
I recently bought a 2014 V8 here in Spain & was keeping my eye on the oil life setting. It got down to like 5% so I've just added some oil.
Stupidly I thought I was then supposed to reset the oil life, which I have done and it is now back up to 100%.
I realise now this is only supposed to be reset after an oil change.
How bad have I screwed up here or is it no biggie?
Also, if THAT isn't the way to know that my oil is running low, what is the way? Simply via dipstick or is there an internal monitor also?
Cheers for any help.

If you only had 5% life left in the in oil just go change it now and reset it. You don't have to wait for the theoretical 0%
Yes you should check your oil with the dip stick. GM says a car can use as much as 1 quart of oil per 1000 miles (1600 Km) and still be fine. Until you know the car you should check it at least every 1000 miles (1600 Km). Most cars will not use a quart in a 1000 miles but a quart every 2500 miles (4000 Km) is not uncommon. I believe the car has a low oil level light but that is a light you never want to see. Yes, I have own cars and known of cars that don't use oil and never need any added between changes. That is not true for most cars.
As the car gets older you should do it more often although oil leaks are not as much of a problem as they used to be. I check my 2000 with 65,000 miles on it every fill up. I don't what to find out about a new oil leak because my engine ran out of oil.
If you drive the car hard or do any track time Then check the oil before and after any event and change the oil at 50% life.
