Hi Paul, first off we'll need to know what year car and what motor it has and what the mileage is on the car and the motor if known.
Lifters(followers) are a common place for noise especially in a tired engine, most are hydraulic and once adjusted should last until worn out.
Some (few ) high performance engines in the early years had solid lifters which are naturally noisy even when adjusted correctly and get really noisy when out of adjustment.
A broken valve spring could also cause cam train noise and if the valve lets loose destroy your engine so I'd recommend not running it anymore until you find the source of the noise.

I do not own one so I have never researched it but valve train issues are very common on the V6. If you google it you will get a lot of hits including youtube videos.

Timing chain stretch/failure is common on the 3.6 engine you have, especially if previous owners were abusive with infrequent oil changes or letting the oil level run low. And/or if the engine is sludged up, the timing chain tensioner could be compromised and not keeping the chains tight (another contributor to chain wear). If you're hearing a metal on metal slapping type of noise, then that's most likely what you have going on.
