Dealership Markup
I called about the pre-orders and one of the dealerships in Florida is adding a $5,000 markup fee on top of the MSRP. Deposits are running from $1,000 to $2,500.
Anyone else kinda taken back on the price spiking? That is pure profit to the dealer. I was ready to pay 28k for a new 2LT, not 33k

Markup is BS. and so is pre order, there will be hundreds of thousands of camaros produced and it says no where that if you preorder that you will get yours sooner. Think about it, if they were making a hard to get limited run car then why are they competing with mustang prices and offer a v6 model. if you pay extra you wont get it any sooner and you will be pissed when you go pick it up and theres 10 more on the lot.

All large production lines are design to run efficiently over the life of the project, 3 years or so in this case. The faster you want a line to run the more it costs upfront to tool the line and the more it cost to maintain that line everyday.
So if marketing says they think they can sell 2 million cars in the next 3 years. The line will be designed to build 55,600 cars a month running 3 shifts 5 days a week. If the line starts 2/10/09 as schedule and does not have major issue GM will produce 37K cars in February. If we assume the cars build in February will be delivered in March you need to take the 37K worth of cars and divided that by the 10’s of thousands of GM dealerships and you see why not everyone will get their cars in March. The above number are completely laid out by me and are guesses. The important thing to note is they can not size the line for the initial buying spike.
GM has figured out how many cars will be in the first release and that is what the Dealers are pre-selling. I would expect releases every 2 weeks from that point on. In the current economic climate I would guess that 5K would get you the car 3-4 month before someone who does not want to pay the extra bucks. I have a friendwho wanted the Challenge as soon as it was released. He is unwilling to pay the extra $$ over MSRP. He is still waiting although I think he now knows when it will be delivered.

Another thing is GM does try to allocate cars to all dealerships. In areas like Miami, Atlanta and Houston 5K buyers’ fee might not hurt sales. In these areas 100K cars are common. If you look to the dealership in hard hit economic area or rural areas you may find 1500 or less buyers premiums. I remember back in the late 80’s one of our customers wanted a Monte SS Aero Couple. We could not get any from GM. Since this was a very good customer the general manager found one on a lot of a small dealership in the mountains of WV for a fee of course.

Anyone else found their local Chevrolet dealership clueless and out of touch?! This one fits the bill:

Asked the day after pre-order sales went live, and they had no clue, no literature or even printouts from GM, took my #, and never called since. I am sure they REALLY wanted to make the sale... ;-(
