Default Code P0300 Solved (COIL PACK)

After my rebuild of the 3.8 in the Camaro I STILL had this totally random and unpredictable misfire. It was SO annoying. I read so many different things that it could have been. During my build I replaced the spark plugs and wires so I KNEW it couldn't have been that (At least a very small probability).

So the next thing on my list was the Coil packs. I did not really care for spending the 90-100 bucks to do this BUT after checking them I realized they are the ORIGINAL packs on it. Being a 17 year old car I thought I might as well change them. Upon taking out the bolts that hold the packs in I noticed some rust on the bolts. This told me that SOME moisture had entered the contacts. I also noticed some arcing damage on the spark posts. Believe it or not this made me feel better about changing them. I am not sure WHY I didn't change them while I was doing the initial build. I guess Money mattered. I am not rich by any means.

Anyway. I changed the coil packs out completely and made sure to use some dielectric grease on the connections. A 30 Mile Test drive later and NO MISFIRE! WOW!!! I am SO glad it wasn't something more sinister. I think what gave it away was the pure randomness of the problem. There was never any specific condition in which the problem would arise.

Funny story: I went to the local autozone and asked the guy to clear my codes and he flat out refused. LOL. Apparently it's against the law (Or their policy) to do that. So he let me "Borrow" it in the parking lot to erase the codes. Codes are gone, and things are looking good.

The only issue I have running around in the back of my head is the fact that maybe I should have replaced the ICM. But holy cow those are like 150$. I think I will run it this way for a while and see what happens. The only other code I was getting was an emission reading for the EVAP. I don't really care about smog though because in my area I do not require it. Anyway...

Just thought I would pass this info along. Maybe it will help someone.

Congrats, visual inspection is a key troubleshooting tool.
Glad to read you're back on the road.
