Blown head gasket, cracked block?
Okey so i just bought a 94 3.4l firebird and the owner said it either had a blown headgasket or a cracked block. White smoke comes out of the tailpipes but i nothing seems to leak anywhere. How do i tell if it is just a blown head gasket or not. And how do i remove the upper intake?

Check your oil.. does it look milky or have a white milky residue in it? Also you can check and see if there is any oil mixed with the water in your radiator.. Usually when you have a blown head gasket water and oil mix and you'll find that mixture in either your radiator or your oil pan.. or both.

I got the heads off last night. And i thnik i can see where the head gasket was blown, it kinda looks cracked a little, i will post pictures tonight. The is a milky sludge of oil and coolant on the rocker arms and around them and the coolant definatly had oil in it, so hopefully the head gasket was the only problem. After working on mustang engines i have to say, the engine could not have possibly been pushed back any father on these cars, it is rediculous. Anyways im having the heads and intakes and throttle body ported and polished by www.freewebs.com/harrisonporting and then putting the car back together. I know most of you will say go with the 3400 swap but im not changing pistons so thats out of the question.

Make sure you have the head surfaces checked to see if they're true. A slight warp wouldn't be uncommon, and could have also been the cause of the leak in the first place. At this point, it would be foolish not to have the heads checked and milled slightly (if needed).
