Default exhaust carbon build up

i had my muffler removed and a straight pipe welded in, but i had the tips welded up a bit too high, so now some of the carbon from the exhaust is building up on the body. will this come off with just a good soapy rag, or do i have to polish it off? i want to replace my bumper sometime in the future because it was hit and has a hole in it and the paint came off, but i still want it to look good
