Default GTO rape

now im a bit confused by this one. ive raced a few times from stoplights before (mostly ricers, the occasional 'bird) but this one just doesnt make much sense to me.

on my way home from my girlfriends house i come to a light and an orange late model (most likely '04 or '05) GTO 5.7 pulls up next to me with a middle aged man in the drivers seat. all i can notice thats done is exhaust (bout as loud as mine) and revs his engine a couple times like he wants to go. this would be the first american muscle car ive raced, besides the 'birds but i dont really count those since its the same LT1 engine, not much of a challenge unless upgraded, and thought what the hell this could be fun.
so i rev mine and a few seconds later the light turns green.

i floor it and roast this **** outta my tires, he pulls away by maybe a car length, then i gain traction and take off. i catch up and pass him maybe 3 seconds later and once i get maybe 3 car lenghts ahead of him at 120mph i slow down ya know thinking ive won its over, and it was.

what confuses me is that my maro is auto and hes stick and i still killed him. even stick shift stock hes got prolly 40hp on me and he screwed 2nd gear up but still even stock hes got me by a bit of power. not sure if he just doesnt know how to drive it very well or what but yah i killed him and for driving an auto i felt pretty good about it for my first real US vs US race

and yah i know i pretty much got lucky but ill take it

the gto are heavy, sure there about 400lb over the camaro. My ls1 keeps up with my pals, and he had, full bolt ons, intake, exhaust etc, and 1.8 ratio rockes and a tune and puts down ~ 365 rwhp. Least 50 over the camaro as it is but he only runs a 13 ish 1/4 mile due to the weight and gearing. IN stock form they just die at 120mph as they shift into 5th which is a much lower gear ration than 4th so thats al they got

Good kill

He may have just called it quits after a couple gears not wanting to risk a ticket or wreck.
120mph would get you locked up around here if you're caught and you can probably kiss your car goodbye too.

only the 04's are the 5.7 the 05-06 have the 6.0. the 04 make around 320rwhp and way a little over 3700 pounds.

i don't know which one you were driving, but the '04 LS1 M6 i was driving pulled nice and hard all the way to 140mph.

OP good kill, anything can happen on the street.

Eventually someone will chuck a nice 8 foot long 4x4 or cinder block out in front of you. Racing in town is just wrong.

Yeap a LS1 GTO is a good bit slower then a LS1 F-body. When i was still near stock with just every day tires and a cat back i meet a guy in a bone stock LS2 GTO at the track. We raced 3 or 4 times and every race it was with in 2 cars. I took him 2 out of the 3 times. It made for some good solid runs and its a blast when your coming up to the beam at 100 plus and your with in a hood of each other but i was kind of shocked since i had expected a car thats rated at 75 more horses to destroy me.

But i do agree with the above. Take it to the race track next time going 120 plus in town or even on a high way is just asking for it.

i still am kinda skeptical about this though... a bolt on/tuned LT1 out running an LS1 up top??? now i know the LS1 isn't god's engine, but the LT1 heads don't exactly flow the greatest up top. the stock cam doesn't help too much either.
