Unless they are a vr4 twin turbo there is know way they could come close to a 4th gen z28. I test drove 2 of them with the 3.0 natural aspirated and at the time i thought they would be fast and I had a 2001 eclispse gt and it would run circles around both of the 3000gts so they are pretty weak. They are more like a 6 banger camaro but slower.

in the UK the gt3000 ARE all twin turbos! LS1 is a good match for them thought, it comes down to driver mod. However if they run a little more boost, bigger intercooler, etc then they fly

Long story short yes stock for stock with a newer VR4 in great condition might be a drivers race. But if i was putting money on it i would go with the F-body that i know can go out there and run low 13 second passes all night long vs the VR4 that might be able to make a mid 13 second passes. Just my 2 cents.

well first off... the 97 3000gt is the failure year of 3000 gts. only put down 161 hp
i have a first gen 3000 gt 93'... N for the record a base model gt puts down 222hp FWD on the 3.0 DOHC 6G72. only yr it had 160 was 97' quit making the 3000gt out 2 be a POS when u dont know wut ur talkin

And if you want to bring in the big guns you could try and run a LT1 (low 14s) or a LS1 (low 13s) and see how you fair. FWD has its place and i love a well built FWD car (cobalt SS, 4G63 Eclipse, MSP, SRT4, RSX-S, H22 Prelude, Etc and so one) But the NA 3000GT was not one of them. It was a large heavy car that was under powered and lacked a good suspension system to get the car around the turns. Brakes in the car where not all that good and driving it around town fills like driving a small boat.
I would much rather drive a 420A (NA 2.0L 135HP neon engine) powered eclipse then a NA 3.0 3000 GT.

hahaha man... 3000gtsrock dude....dont even know what to say to your dumb *** besides theres no way in hell you would beat an lt1 whether from a standstill or roll. what I think happened, 3000gt dude pulled up to a guy in a 4th gen Z or SS, wanted to race. what he didnt realize is the camaro had just run out of gas and the passenger was on the other side pushing. this is the only logical explanation for any non turbo'd 3000gt beating an LT1.

well i know this is an old thread but while driving down the road a 3000gt (non vr4) kept on my butt and wouldn't go away. Two college kids pulled up next to me (doing 55) and wanted to race. it was starting to create a possible bad day, I asked my 9 yr old to roll down his window and wave good bye.... i drive a 05 AWD...yes AWD... Magnum R/T with slight mods and a 91+ octane program... never saw them again.... but in the rear view getting smaller. The maggie with my fat butt in it weighs almost 5k.... and I don't have a mullet but a military cut suits me.

nah the tires on my z are starting to wear and all it does is give me problems hooking until im rolling at about 25 or so lol. When they were new and it was a warm day i could stomp it from a dead stop and hook up fine.

Late to the party, put wanna put my opinion in too.
You're comparing a 3rd gen to a 3000Gt? Sure, the 3000Gt will win. You compare it to the 4th gen LT1s and LS1s, and you're gonna get smoked.
You eat Camaro/Mustangs with your base 3000GT? Sorry, but I don't think so. My buddy had a '95 3000GT, 5spd, ended up selling it for a truck cause he's an idiot. Anyways, my '96 Buick Century kept up with him until he hit 3rd gear at which he started to pull away and win. If a 3100 v6 grandpa car could keep up with a base 3000Gt, how is it you believe that 300+ hp V8 is gonna lose?
