Been looking in Haverhill MA area but not too much up this way.

 

I think you might find that biodiversity drops prior to a mass extinction. With less diversity, the population as a whole becomes more vulnerable. After the mass extinction, biodiversity soars, as new forms race to compete for ecological niches.
