Default What's the best Synthetic Oil for my 97 SS?

Just bought a really nice 1997 SS with 105k miles. In the wife's car I use Amsoil
which is advertised to go 25k miles or one year between changes. The SS
manual recommends Quaker State. I want to change the oil to start fresh.
Can I use the Amsoil 5-30 or is another brand better for the engine?

Thanks!

If you plan to go 25K between oil changes, be prepared to also change engine with your second oil change. Even if you have a perfect oil that doesn't break down, you still wind up with a lot of abrasive dirt floating around in the oil which will wear out your engine in short order. The oil filter can only pick up so much, and as it stars to clog more and more oil is bypassed around the filter, and you wind up with nice dirty oil circulating throughout your engine. Forget about oils and additives making ridiculous claims, it is all BS. Go with a good syntethic oil such as Mobil1, which is what GM rcommends for the LT1 Corvette, and change the oil and filter every 3000 miles.

Yeah the filters are made of paper elements that do break down with time. Even though synthetic oil does not break down with water, it still accumulates it and unless you run your engine long enough for it to be passed through the pcv vavle and into the exaust you could have more problems. Like he said, the sediment will kill your engine. Also at that milage I would go for Quaker State's High Milage FULL SYNTHETIC oil. that way it has addatives in it, such as slick 50, and others that will help run cooler, smoother, cleaner and it will also help keep the seals hydrated.
