What oil to use
#2
For some its a matter of preference. I like 20/50 year round. As far as brand I have three choices...for the race car its Lucas all the way ( but I get it free lol), For a good DD I tend to use Castrol GTX. And for a leaker or junker I use an oil from Family Dollar! Thats right I said Family Dollar! Its called American XT and believe it or not its good stuff. A good friend showed me why it is so good. His name is Forrest Lucas!
Anyway there are some to stay away from but if I list them here it will probably start fights and I don't want that. Synthetics are for the most part good and work great in older engines. Just stay away from quick lubes! I mean it I'll shoot you if you go there! J/K lol

well like country boy said its mostly a matter of preference. Personally I run 10w30 Royal Purple. Only opinion I have on the matter is that if you don't have 50,000 on the engine I wouldn't run a synthetic oil.

My Z28 and Mustang tend to be driven under 3k RPMs even under accelleration. My Honda and Mazda tend to be wound up more.
I use Castrol, Penzoil or Quaker State 5 w 30 on all of them, which ever is on sale at Advanced Auto Parts.
I've put over 200k miles on 2 different Toyotas, all highway miles (work related), changed every 5k miles, using Walmart oil or again, what was on sale at advanced auto. I didn't burn a lick of oil or have problems.

lately i've been using valvoline synthetic blend (5W30) with Lucas additive. I've got 78K on my 97 LT1, and will probably be going full synthetic, probably mobil 1 with Lucas synthetic additive. Good stuff. However, conventional and synthetic blend (5W30) tend to be a bit runny, especially when hot. My oil pressure goes down to about 10-ish PSI. A friend of mine with a 96 has about 120K on his and just went full synthetic, has higher oil pressure and no more top-end ticking on startup (when cold).
My manual (and oil fill) says to use 5W30. I've thought about using 10W30 for my conventional or synthetic blend due to the low oil pressure issues. Anyone else with low pressure using 5W30?
