it helps balance the bolt pressure for the oil pan

does a new one come with a new gasket?

mab6680 Jul 25, 2011 05:27 AM

no a new gasket does not come with them i cleaned mine up with a wire wheel and reused them

those are supposed to go on the outside of the oil pan. between the bolts and the pan not between the gasket and the block.

Apparently, a previous owner had the pan off, but obviously had no business doing so. As Basic said, those are reinforcement plates for the pan mounting flange. They go on the outside of the pan, and no, you don't need to buy new ones.

hilarious and i thought i had seen it all !!! were they between the gasket and block??

Maybe the person who did that was reading some instructions that said the plates go below the oil pan, which is correct when the engine is in the car.
But the pan was installed while the engine was on a stand....upside down. ;)
