Default tune up help

hey everyone just had some questions i bought a 1994 z28 camaro and i think it needs a tune up every time i start the car it runs ruff and stalls and when i give it gas it misfires a crap load but the weird part is after anywhere from 10 secs to a minute later the service engine soon light will come on and then it runs fine. just will have some occasional misfire. it does it every time. also if im getting into a tuneup what else should i service while doing one. i intend on keeping the car for a long time so what would be the best things to do while im at it. what type of wires cap spark plugs etc do you recommend? ty for reading! jesse

Tune up on your car just involves changing spark plugs and plug wires. Sounds simple till you try doing it. You said the car runs better after the check engine light goes on. When that lamp goes on the PCM goes into the open loop mode, ignores most sensors and runs the engine using internal tables. This would indicate that one or more sensors is bad. The easy way to find out what is causing the light to go on, is to do exactly what it is telling you to do, get the PCM scanned and get the trouble codes. Otherwise, should you be so inclined, you can just throw parts at the car and hope it gets better, something like having a pastrami sandwich to cure a heart attack.

Bad IAC won't make engine misfire.

have the car scanned for trouble codes like pete is saying. can be a pain to find a scanner that will work on the 94 but will save money in the long run.

if you just got the car have all the fluids changed, change air and fuel filters, check the condition of the plug wires, if look old change, change plugs, have the brakes checked, ball joints, tie rod ends, front and rear control arm bushings need to be checked as well. the shocks can dictate how these cars handle so if there the orange originals pick up some high quality shocks for it. i recommend koni but are on the spendy side.
