Default Transmission shot :(

Driving home from work the other night on the highway entrance ramp i lost 3rd gear. It shifted fine through 1 and 2 but once it got ready to shift into 3rd it basically acted like it was in neutral and with my foot on the gas my RPMs shot up till i let off. My first thought was maybe it's an electrical problem maybe a bad ground or something else electrical related so I turned off and on the car and it was consistently not shifting into 3rd gear. Ended up having to drive it home (30miles) in 2nd, overheating the sh*t out of my trans fluid.

I know a little about transmission but nowhere near enough to diagnose anything so I took it to a shop and they said no electrical problem I most likely blew a servo or something else in there just snapped and it would need to be rebuilt.

So my question is, I know trannys are hard to rebuild but how hard? I'd rather not/can't afford to throw down the $2200 out the door for them to rebuild my tranny so is it something I could get a shop book for and try my hand at it myself? Also is there any rebuild kit better than any other?

It's just the stock 4L60E Automatic. Fluid is clean maybe a tad dirty from driving that long in 2nd but all it needs is a good rebuild.

pick up a factory service manual for your yr. are u talking about taking the trany out or rebuilding. ill be changing mine soon. takes a day. to pull one and install the other, two if youve never done it. takes two to three weeks, depending on shipping time, for patc to do a trany not real sure on the others. if i remember right one of the two lower ones has a rebuild cd.
