tires, newbie question!
ok very newbie question. need wider tires but have little knowledge about them. i have the general knowledge but what tires are best for getting the most traction of the line. any suggestions? the tires i have are very low on tread and am buying 4 new ones as soon as you guys give me some places. basically the ones on there are 245 40 18 size and are not very wide at all. do i need to change the rims to get wider ones or do i just buy wider tires? idk any help on this is appreciated

I suggest http://tirerack.com
I got the new tires for the Cobalt there; at a lower cost than buying cheaper tires here, even counting in shipping costs.
As far as fitment, this should explain it for you better than I can.

As far as an actual tire, I like my BFGoodrich gForce Super Sports. I have 'em on the Camaro and the Cobalt is getting them on Friday, but everyone has different opinions as to what's a good one to go with.

interesting question without a simple answer
only you can really answer the question
is it your daily driver
what % of time is spent on public roads
what % of time is spent at the drag strip where you need the hook?
if a daily driver, do you get much rain?
does it get very hot where you are? If so, softer tires don't hold us well in hot climates
are you willing to trade off longevity and treadwear in exchange for better launches at the drag strip?
There is no such thing as a utopian tire. You need to decide what your needs are and maybe it's just best to grab a set of old rims and slap on some drag radials and change tires when you go to the track.
Again, only you know your specific application. Me, I live in FL and thus use Toyo Proxes on the stang and camaro. Softer tires wear out way too fast in the heat.
