Default T-56 transmission?

Hey guys, I have a 96 Z28, six-speed. Sometimes it won't let me put it into 2nd, I have to either put it back into first then back into 2nd, or put it in neutral, then to 2nd. Also, when i get on it and try to shift to 5th, it grinds???

Possibilities: the clutch is not releasing fully, or the synchros are worn, or low or wrong type lubricant, or a combination of those problems.

it sounds like skip shift. It activates between a dead stop and 2500 rpms. As far as the 5th gear thing I have no clue.

I say you have some worn syncros. does the car or at least tranny seem to have a lot of vibration when you get on the pedal? Before I had my tranny rebuild, my syncros were all worn out and if I went full throttle my shifter would actually move up and down about an inch. I had a buddy who was bougth a car and it had a little grinding between gears and a little gear slippage he bought an additive for his tranny fluid, fixed his problem, you might want to try something like that.

Ya, the skip-shift light does appear on the 2nd geat situation, but what is skip-shift even for? Also, how much does re-sycroing cost or whatever?

Skip-shift was GM's way around the "Gas Guzzler" tax on the high performance 6-speed cars. It forces you to go from 1st to 4th and theoretically saves gas. Most people eliminate it because it's annoying. If that's the only problem you're having with your transmission you probably don't need to do any internal work.
