Secondary Air Pump Question
 

I'm having a bit of trouble with my secondary air pump on my 1996 z28, I'm looking to bypass the system because it was throwing a "ses" light, and it seems harder to fix than bypass, for something I don't really need. The car runs and drives fine, and if I pull the battery off the light stays out for a good 20 minute drive. A friend told me to pull the relay out and plug the hose between the intake and the air pump, but that doesn't seem to do it. does anyone know more about this? And for the record, I'm not too concerned about emissions, since I'm in PA.

try pulling the fuse out, if that throws a light then put the fuse back in and unplugg at the pump and see if theat sets the light. before i got a new pump i know one of those worked without the light coming on,,,, just dont remember which. lol.

i got a pump for 5 bucks if you pay shipping and paypal and its easy to bypass just plug off the two threaded holes with a plug on the headers and pull the pump out with lines or just leave the pump in but if you do bypass it i think the light will still come on if you done get it programmed. the pump is just a air pump for the exhaust. check out the power and ground at the pump and if you have both the pump is bad.

I had an SES light when I got my car for the same reason. Check the fuse. If it's blown, replace it. If it blows again, just disconnect the pump and it'll stop throwing codes and blowing fuses. I haven't had any trouble with it since.

Where are you located? I've never really used paypal before but I might just be game for that. haha.

But youre saying I just unplug the pump and it's bypassed just like that? seems a bit too easy... lol

Edit: I pulled the relay and it threw a code, so now I'm going to pull the plug on the pump and put the relay back and see what happens.

yea unplug the pump and cap the two inputs on the exhaust manifolds its pretty easy. there is a hard metal tube that goes around the bottom of the engine for each side. its hard to get out but you dont have to pull that. if you dont want to. it would look better with that tube out of there if your not using the secondary system.

pretty much it a 12v air pump that puts air into the exhaust manifolds. unplug the pump and cap the spots on the exhaust manifold were the air goes in.

I tried unpluging the pump, but as soon as I do that, the computer throws an ses code. So I just plugged everything in back to normal, reset the computer, and drove it for a good 45 minutes with no ses light. So, I'm at a loss as to what was really wrong when the light was on in the first place. That ses light is really my only concern... lol.

In the near future, I intend on installing Arizona Speed and Marine headers (1 3/4 primaries with a 3in collector), with a matching Y-Pipe (3in), and a 3in flow pipe in place of my cat. Would that have any effect at all on the Air system? (the headers have air and all the same fittings as the stock manifolds)

You can remove the air hoses and other related lines on the exhaust, and it won't throw an error code as long as you leave the pump alone. The computer has no idea where the air is blowing to, but it does know when you unplug the electrical connection to the pump, as you found out.

The AIR pump serves no purpose without cats. If you're going to install headers and delete your cat you might as well do a complete emissions delete (AIR, EVAP, and EGR) to clean up your engine bay and get the codes tuned out.

I really like that idea. But Im not sure how much I can bypass before I can't get it through emissions testing. lol. So I was going to try and bypass the air pump in such a way that it could be reused, and cats added if needed. But how does all that testing work anyway?
