Default rear end

i have a 93 camaro and i bought a set of 3.42 gears used. i asked and the guy i got them from said that all gears would interchange. but I was wondering if that is true why do they list new gears under 3.08 and lower carrier or 3.23 and higher. how will i know which one my gears are for? thanks.

Default RE: rear end

It has mainly to do with the physical size of the gear and its position in the housing. The 3.42 pinion gear is smaller in dia. than the 3.08, which means the ring gear has to move closer to the center of the housing in order to mesh with the pinion. In order to move the ring gear and maintain the ability to adjust backlash and preload, you have to move where the ring gear is positioned on the carrier. I hope that makes sense, but it's not to hard to visualize. You will need to know what your current gear ratio is because not all gears interchange. New gears run about .008 backlash, used .010 backlash or they tend to be noisy. If you let me know what gear you have and what you are going to I can let you know if you need to cange carriers. Also, is that a 7.5 or 8.5 10 bolt or something else.
