reading codes SES

hi all, im posting this on behalf of a pal on the UK forums,

his 94 Z28 has just popped the SES light up after being fine for ages, the car still runs but no idea why the light is on. How could he read the code, and is there a special reader. Note we are in the UK and specialists are limited and shipping a reader just for one code is expensive. Any quick tricks or bite the bullet and pay?

thanks

the ALDL in that car should be the same as here. To read the codes short pins A+B and then turn the key to the on (but not running) and cound the blinks of the CEL. The first code that comes up should be 12 (blink pause blink blink pause) you will get each code 3 times and if you see 12 again you have seen all the codes that are current.

shorting a and b only works on the 93, all other 4th gen's need a scanner. 95 will need one that will scann obd1 with an obd2 plugin. would be a good time to get a adld setup for that plugin so you can see more.

good site

you can get scanning software too

As for me, I have a 95 and I think the 94 is similar (but am not sure) and I use an Actron 9145 scanner.

thanks guys, he did mention that his cooling fan come straight on when you start the car so im wondering if its a simple fix, coolant sensor or something? car running in hot mode?

Thanks to Maudy Z28 for asking about fault finding. I finally had chance to get the diagnostic run today and it's showing code 36. Good old Optispark!
So... what's the best solution for this? Every time i find an alternative like MSD there's as many saying they fail often as there is praising them :icon_shrug:.
Anyone used the Chandler Motorsport ones off ebay? The top shelf one carries a lifetime guarentee, but is it any good? Since we have a lot of rain over here are stock opti's going to fail quickly anyway?
I'm not expecting a cheap fix, just want something that will last a few years!
