Power steering whine/brown fluid

Hello I chnaged my PS pump about a year ago. Past few months I have been changing the fluid frequently due to a whine and fluid turning brown after a few days. Any ideas ? Thanks 95z28

If it hasn't always whined like that then I would hope it has a 1 year warranty and replace it. Usually when something starts making noise, and it's not supposed to, it means it's wearing out.

the power steering pumps are all rebuilds now and the housings are getting old. the old housings are worn by the relief valve, some don't last very long before the fluid starts getting by which heats it up.

Yea no warranties over here just salvage parts on these old cars

Thanks craby I'll have to look into installing a rebuilt one down the line. I removed the reservoir and flipped the lines down to get more fluid out other than using a baster. I saw the pressuriZed line attached to the steering column. Would pulling that line out get more old fluid out or would it be a waste of time ?

i think you would be waisting time. the fluid is being overheated by the failing relief valve and turning color. you should be working harder to turn the steering wheel, mine would be easy when not turning very much but when i had to turn hard it was like i had manual steering.

For the time involved, it's not worth putting on used wear items like this that may be near the end of it's life once it hits the boneyard.
Don't know what you paid for the used one that now went bad, but rockauto.com has reman AC Delco pumps for $51.89.

that's the weird part, the wheel turns as easy as ever. Nothing is difficult its just that the whining sound drives me bonkers lol

Ill have to order that from rock auto today

thanks again yall

rockauto used to be one of our site sponsors. I've bought a bunch of parts from them, but even though they're no longer a sponsor, I still recommend them because they have good prices and service.
Do a google search and you can usually find a 5% discount code for them.

I bleed rock auto. Excellent site. I totally had a brain fart and forgot about them for this scenario. I never had to send a core to them before so this will be an experience

craby 01-09-2015 08:13 PM

they don't make the pump anymore so a rebuildable core is getting hard to find. the main housing is part of the relief system so when it wears out its toast.
