Need Some Ideas for The Exhaust

RE: Need Some Ideas for The Exhaust
I had made my own custom set up. My school has a flow bench for Formula SAE. I went with the tri-y headers straight to an X pipe with 18" of pipe then a flow master to dumps. I like it it sounds good and it is tuned for optimal flow.

If you don't have the means to build your own system you will have to use whatever is available for sale.
These are the biggest restrictions in the stock exhaust:
1) Exaust manifolds. Not too bad but not as good as long tube headers, but be aware that shorties aren't much better than stock maniolds.
2) "Y" pipe, looks like it is made of corrugated tubing and usually poorly assembled with a bad restrictions at the Y.
After market mandrel bent pipes flow much better.
3) Catalytic converter. Very good when new, but tends to clog up as it gets old, may want to try a high flow after market one, or if you have lots of bux, try a cat made for the Viper.
4) Exhaust pipe cat to muffler. Pretty good till it gets to the bend over the rear axle. This is a ugly bend, and uses a smaller diameter pipe causing a bad restriction. A good cat-back system takes care of this problem.
5) Muffler. On par or better than most factory muffler but not as good as an aftermarket performance muffler.
Solution:
1) Long tube headers into good Y pipes, high flow cat, 3" to 4" cat back system. Should gain 25-35HP. Most of these systems perform about the same, but there is a big variety in price and material used. Different brands make different noise. Noise is a matter of taste, but big noise does not necessarily translate into big power.
Once you have a good exhaust sytem, any other mod you make will be much more effective (what goes in has to come out).
