Default hotcam Question

I may be buying a 94 Z28 With the lt4 hotcam kit installed. I'm just curious does the PCM need to be reprogramed with the new cam in?I know he didnt do it. and will it cause any problems w/o getting it programed right away.

Also what do you guys think of the car?

Thanks,

Jake

With those engine mods you'll definately want to get the PCM tuned, in the least get a PCMflorless.com tune, but you'll benefit much more from a reputable dyno tune.

I had the pcm for less in mind. Are the "Power Programers" you can find online that hook up to the PCM any good? Can I program just as much with that as PCMforless can? I never even thaught of a dyno tune... That'd prolly be the best huh I should wait till the engines broken in

The Power Programmers are a $300 paper weight unless you need to remove a speed governor or change your speedo for new rear end gears. PCMforless can tune multitudes more than those little programmers. A full dyno tune is always the best choice though, and most of the time not too much more than the hand helds(I have a local place that does a full dyno tune for $500).

Sounds Good, Now if I can find a dyno shop in my Area... I live in Port Orchard WA, I think the nearest one is in seattle or Tacoma. But that sounds good, as long as a full dyno includes a full pcm program. Thanks for the advice!

The only way they can tune it is through the PCM, so if you find a place that can do it they should have all the software and everything that you'll need. Just make sure you specify that you want a dyno tune, not just a dyno run.

No. With an LT4 Hot Cam kit you don't need to get a custom tune, as it is "plug and play," but I would highly recommend it. Your car will run much stronger with a tune, and you will certainly notice the difference. I personally wouldn't skimp on the tune.

I had Bryan from www.pcmforless.com do my tune (TWICE) and each time he did a top-notch job. Do yourself a favor and stay away from products like Power Programmers. They're $300 fanswitches. They are USELESS. That's great that you can change your gear settings, or sharpen up the shifts of your transmissions with them, but Bryan can do the same thing for you, and probably at a cheaper cost.

I learned the hard way by purchasing a Power Programmer.

Dyno-tunes are great, no doubt, but when you do a dyno-tune, that tune is custom done for whatever the weather is at that particular time. If you get tuned in the winter, because it's cooler, you may be able to mess a bit with the timing and not worry about detonation, but come summer, you may be getting detonation with that same tune because of the warmer temperatures.
